Download iPlayer radio programmes in MP3 format

Forum / Community Blog

Well... it's not really a forum, but you can use this page to leave comments, ask a question about Radio DL or make a request for a new feature.

This is a new section of the website and to be honest, I'm not really sure how it's going to be used, so I guess I'll just see what kind of comments people leave and we'll take it from there.

    Excellent looking good!
    What does it do?

  2.

This is a great little programme I use it to listen to the previous days radio at work on my mp3. However for the last couple of days I get an error saying there is no mp3 for evry programme I try to download and as such Have not been able to enjoy said programmes. Is this a common experience or just me?

  3.

Al: I have had that same error message saying there is no mp3 version for programmes that normally download fine. I only noticed it today- it was fine on saturday.

  4.

I love Radio DL! I use it for anything which isn't podcast. I have been listening to Earthsearch II on Radio 7 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00cftbn) and have successfully downloaded Episodes 1 - 8. Unfortunately I get the 'No MP3 file available' message when trying to download Episodes 9 & 10.

  5.

@Al, graspee & Bob: I've seen the 'No MP3 file available' message come and go over the past year and I've always meant to do some proper analysis on it. Prompted by your messages, I've had another look at it and fixed the issue for Bob's Earthsearch episodes 9 & 10.
You should be prompted to download v2009.12.18 when you next start up Radio DL (if not, use the link under Help>>About>>Check for Update)

  6.

Thanks Luke that update did the trick, much appreciated.

  7.

Excellent! Thanks so much, Luke. I can now listen to the finale of Earthsearch at my leisure! :-)

  8.

I also had the 'No mp3 file available' message which was fixed by v2009.12.18.

I now have a new problem - whenever I try to search using the search term 'radio 4' I get this message: 'Run-time error'05'. Invalid procedure call or argument'

Searching 'radio 4' worked fine until last night and searching using 'radio 7' gives me no problem.

    Any ideas?

      Hi Ian,
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
The problem occurs because of the large number of programmes that are available for Radio 4 at the moment. The problem should rectify itself as some of the older programmes fall out of their availability period.
That said, I've added a fix, which will be included in the next release of Radio DL.

  9.

Thanks Luke - since I discovered Radio DL my commute to work has become a little less tedious. As I work shift work, I don't always travel at the same time every day so I always end up missing bits of programmes. Now I can listen to complete programmes and escape the intolerable Sarah Kennedy!!

  10.

Great program. Any possibility of adding a resume function? I download from a boat via satellite, and if the connection drops out 95% of the way though a download I have to start again!

    Hi,

I can't open your zipped file to run setup - my computer keeps telling me the zipped file is empty? Can you help?

    Thanks

  12.

Brilliant programme. Simple, efffective and no frills; wish more were like this.

  13.

    Two problems -
1- I am trying to download the Home Planet series from radio 4, there are 21 programs in the series on iplayer but the radio-dl search on home planet only finds the most recent broadcast.
2- same as other people I am getting the same error message saying there is no mp3 version.

    •

      Hi Peter,
Thanks for your message, I'll do my best to answer your two points:
      1. When you say "there are 21 programmes in the series on iplayer" where are you seeing this? When I check http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ and search for Home Planet, I can only see the most recent episode.
      2. You may be using an out-of-date version of Radio-DL. The latest version is v2009.12.18, and it should be able to download [the one available episode of] Home Planet ok.
(You can check your current version by selecting Help>>About on the Radio-DL menu bar. If your current version is v2009.09.17, click the "Check for Update" button and then "Yes" to download the latest version. Otherwise, you can get it from here).

    Hi Luke
I was looking on the programme page rather than the iplayer page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006sdz0/episodes/player it does have 21 programmes available to listen to.

    The version I have is 2009 12 18
    I am running windows Vista

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program still no luck

      Hi Peter,
I'm a bit surprised that these programmes are still available so long after broadcast, but the BBC have clearly made a decision to keep them available.
That being the case, you may be able to enter the Programme ID directly into the main window of Radio DL. For example, from the programmes page, click on the "programme information" link for any episode. This will take you to the episode synopsis. The Programme ID is the 8 character code that appears in the address bar of the synopsis.
eg. for the most recent episode, (12/01/2010) the Programme ID is b00pqj13.
      Hope this helps.

    Hi Luke

Thanks for this great product, It's great for the bike-ride to work. I've also had the 'Run-time error'05' problem when doing a category search for "factual" (which runs for about 10 pages on the iplayer). I can work around it using "copy link location" but it would be great to be able to use the in-built search in Radio DL.

    Hi Luke,

Thanks for the programme - looks excellent. I do run into a problem, however, namely that when I want to download a programme (b00q0gh9 in this case, only available until tonight) I get a run-time error message [-2147012746 (80072f76)]. Any idea what that might mean?

    Again, thanks for your effort!

      Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your message. This poorly-handled runtime error will be fixed (or at least handled better) in the next version of Radio DL.
The message basically means that the programme is not available to download using Radio DL.
      This could be because:
      - The programme not within its availability period (normally 7 days after broadcast)
      - The BBC have not encoded the programme as an MP3
      - Radio DL is being used from outside the UK (see the Radio DL Home Page under "Intended Use" & "How It Works" for more info on this)

      Cheers, Luke

  17.

Great utility and simple to use.

A suggestion : Make the Q and search windows scalable so that one can see all of the contents. I present I have to adjust to column sizes which is a bit of a hassle.

Well done and thanks for making it available.

    Chris

  18.

I've been using Radio DL for a while now - great utility, and something the BBC should really provide!

Just started having a repeated problem: I get a run-time error message [-2147012746 (80072f76)]. There's an earlier post about that, I know.

    So far I have:

1 Tried several programmes (including The Archers from 3 days ago). All give the same error.
2 Ensured that I was using the latest version (2009.12.18)
3 Uninstalled, cleaned the registry and reinstalled.

Still no joy. Any suggestions, please???

    Thanks

    Geoff

  19.

Adding to my previous post - I'm in the UK, and can play iPlayer programmes on my PC.

    Thanks

    Geoff

      Hi Geoff,
Thanks for letting me know about this. I can see what the problem is and I think I can see what to do about it but, erm, not today unfortunately.
Check back on Sunday, I'll hopefully have an updated version then.

Having said that, The Archers is available direct from the Radio 4 website as a podcast so you can get it that way.
      Cheers, Luke.

Edit: it turns out that I was able to look into it. Version 2010.02.18 is now live.

Further edit: it would appear that my fix in v2010.02.18 did not work (see comments below). I will post again when the issue is resolved.

Final edit: v2010.02.19 has now been released which corrects the issues in v2010.02.18

  20.

Like Geoff Cusick above I have been using Radio (2009.12.18) for some time with great success. That is until last night when I started to get the same run time error message as Geoff when attempting to download numerous MP3 files. It was with some relief that I saw Geoff’ posting and your response about version 2010.02.18.
Unfortunately the new version gives the same error message to every file that I have attempted to download –“ MP3 Stream Error There is not MP3 file available for Programme ID: ------- . Not all programmes are encoded in MP3 format by the BBC etc.” I have even tried programmes that I successfully downloaded yesterday and can still listen via the BBC Iplayer. I hope you can suggest a solution.
    Regards
    Chris

  21.

    Hi Luke,

First off - thanks for being so quick off the mark. Sadly, same problem as ChrisB. Could it be something the BBC's done?

    Regards

    Geoff

  22.

I too am having the same problem, restored back to yesterday to run the previous version but that gave runtime errors.
I have another prog I used to use but that just errors to " There is no page for this programme" even though it detects the file.
    Maybe it is the BBC.

    Barry

  23.

    Just a quick update.
Th older prog I used (which is not a patch on yours) I have just updated and it now works so it is not the BBC meddling.

    Barry

  24.

I can confirm Barry's experience above - another program I use still works. Agree with Barry's comment about the superiority of your program.

    Geoff

  25.

    @Barry, @Geoff,@Chris:
    Thanks for your comments.
I'll look into this and let you know when I release a new version.

  26.

    Hi Luke,
Just wish I had the knowledge that you have to write a prog. like this.
I have not found any means of reniumeration on your site. Very magnanimous of you to give it for free.
If I had to pay for this I think that would be worthwile for the benifit it gives me

    Barry

  27.

Radio DL version 2010.02.19 has now been released and corrects the issues mentioned in the above comments.

Edit: v2010.02.20 corrects a bug introduced by 2010.02.19

  28.

    Hi Luke,

Just a quick note to thank you for your fantastic work on this. An amazing response to get it working so quickly. I imagine that you must have been working well into the night.

    Once again thanks

    Regards

    Chris

  29.

    Hi Luke,
Just like to say thanks, great work, executed elegantly.
I've tried many before and this is the best.
Stick a "paypal donate" button on here, and I'll buy you a pint. ;-)

    Run-time error '339':

Component 'mscomclt.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid

  31.

I have just started using Radio DL but every time I get the error message "The download of the specified resource has failed".

I've tried typing in the resource name e.g. "b00jxpn" and searching for the title "The Impersonator".

Any idea what I am doing wrong or what needs to be changed on my system? I'm running Vista Home Premium.

  32.

Am trying to download the program file: b00r9q9y

I get the error message: "An error occurred. It was not possible to determine the remote file location."

I am able to play the program in iplayer.

    Thanks!!
